Are you getting ready for your Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC) exam? I know how you feel. It is a big step. Inpatient coding is very different from outpatient coding, and it can feel scary.
I created this practice course to help you. I want you to walk into the testing center feeling ready. This course is not about boring lectures. It is about practice. The best way to learn is by doing questions that look and feel like the real test.

The hardest part of the CIC exam for most people is ICD-10-PCS (procedure coding) and the Clinical Scenarios. If you only know CPT, you will struggle here. I focus heavily on these areas so you can get comfortable with them.
I wrote these questions to test your knowledge and teach you at the same time. Every question comes with an explanation. I tell you why one answer is right and why the others are wrong. This helps you fix your mistakes before the real exam.
What will we cover together?
We will go through four main sections that mirror the real exam structure for 2026:
Inpatient Documentation & Compliance: We look at the rules. You need to know things like the "72-Hour Rule," HIPAA, and what counts as a "Hospital Acquired Condition." These are free points on the exam if you know the regulations.
ICD-10-CM Diagnosis Coding: This is not just basic coding. We look at specific inpatient guidelines. We cover the tricky stuff like "Principal Diagnosis" selection, coding for Sepsis, HIV, and uncertain diagnoses.
ICD-10-PCS Procedure Coding: This is the big one. I break down the 7-character system. You will practice identifying the correct "Root Operation." You will learn the difference between Excision and Resection, or Release and Division. If you can get the Root Operation right, you can get the code right.
Clinical Coding Scenarios: This is where we put it all together. These are short medical stories (mini-cases). You have to read the chart and pick the right codes for both the diagnosis and the procedure. This is exactly what you will do as a real inpatient coder.
