Course Description

he ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) is one of the most widely used laboratory techniques in the poultry industry for diagnosing infectious diseases, monitoring vaccination programs, and ensuring food safety in commercial production systems. This course provides a practical, industry-focused understanding of how ELISA works and how it can be applied to support effective poultry health management.

You will begin by learning the principles of immunology, including the role of antigens, antibodies, epitopes, and immune response. We will then explore the structure and workflow of ELISA testing, how the antigen–antibody reaction is detected, and how color development is interpreted. The course explains the two main types of ELISA used in poultry diagnostics: Indirect ELISA and Blocking (Competitive) ELISA, highlighting their differences, advantages, limitations, and proper use in disease detection and vaccination evaluation.

A major part of this course focuses on how ELISA is used to diagnose common avian diseases, such as Newcastle Disease (ND), Avian Influenza (AI), Infectious Bronchitis Virus (IBV), and Marek’s Disease. You will learn how to interpret antibody titers to determine whether birds are responding to vaccination, exposed to infection, or experiencing a disease outbreak. The course also demonstrates how ELISA is used to detect foodborne pathogens, including Salmonella and E. coli, supporting food safety and public health protection.

By the end of this course, you will be able to perform ELISA assays, interpret results accurately, evaluate flock immunity, and make informed decisions to improve disease control, vaccination effectiveness, and production performance. This training is ideal for veterinary students, poultry farm managers, laboratory technicians, and animal health professionals seeking practical diagnostic skills in poultry immunology and poultry disease management.
